Dead Reckonings
Do you remember Necrofile? Do you miss its great, in-depth critical reviews of major releases in the horror and dark fantasy fields? I know I do, and I've lamented the loss of Necrofile, the absence of critical review venues in the genre, and the lack of much even half-decent genre reviewing in this journal more than once.

Well, something's being done about it. S.T. Joshi and I are co-editing a new review journal of horror and dark fantasy. Dead Reckonings will be issued semi-annually through Hippocampus Press and will contain approximately 35,000 words of essays and shorter reviews per perfect-bound issue.

The first issue will focus on works released or to be released between September of 2006 and March of 2007, and it should be available by the end of this coming February. Reviewers and essayists scheduled for appearance in the first issue include Hank Wagner, Matt Cardin, Paula Guran, John Langan, Michael Marano, Richard Bleiler, June Pulliam, Mike Roden, Ramsey Campbell, and many more.

We are still soliciting materials to review, and if you have finished copies or ARCs of a book recently released or due in the next few months, please query me. I can be contacted at jackharinga _at_ charter(dot) net. When you get in touch, please let me know the publisher of your book, as well as the title and author (I don't know everyone's LJ ID/handle).

It's only serendipitous that I'm making this announcement at the same time there's a kerfluffle in [info]pgtremblay's journal over reviewing.

I've been ruminating and contemplating about topics, but I'll send you some thoughts this weekend.

No worries. Maybe I'll think of some broad stuff to help you out.

Also if you want we can work on a tag-team thing for discussion forum or something for Dead Reckonings. I can host it a few different ways.

I believe the technical term is "W00t!"

Joshi was the first editor ever to publish my work (a piece in Lovecraft Studies, waaaaay back in the day), and I was a devoted reader of pretty much everything he was editing for Necronomicon Press. This is great news for my long-languishing academic horror geek.

You know, there has yet to be a horror story written in l33t, or whatever it's called. Maybe you could do one of those. I figured you'd be one of the people to dig this news, though.

l33t5p34K is its own horror, I think. Anything longer than flash fiction would (hopefully) collapse under its own weight, compressing into a tiny, dense, spot of matter so powerful that not even grammar can escape. d00d. That would so r0XX0r.

And yes, I do very much dig the news. Consider my breath to be sufficiently bated...
